Democracy Belongs to Us
Dear friends of P4I,
We are proud to announce that we are officially one year old! One year ago today, six women decided that democracy support could be done differently: collaboration over competition, partnership over paternalism, and genuine trust in the expertise of the people doing the work on the ground. Today, we are celebrating P4I’s first birthday, and we could not be prouder of what this community has built together.
This would be a very long email if we talked about everything, but we wanted to share some highlights and, importantly, express our gratitude. Has this been easy? Absolutely not. Has it been worth it? Completely. Could we have done it without you? Not a chance.
Highlights from this year (with a lot more in the works, stay tuned!)
Nepal: We supported youth organizations in running get-out-the-vote campaigns and countering disinformation ahead of the March 2026 elections.
Moldova: We trained disability advocates, election officials, and civil society organizations on inclusive electoral participation, in partnership with Infonet Alliance.
Sri Lanka: We advanced climate change and inclusive governance programming, working alongside local partners to connect environmental accountability with democratic participation.
The Caribbean: We launched the Regional Accessible and Inclusive Democracy (RAID) Working Group, surveying barriers to accessible elections across six countries.
South Asia: We convened a new Community of Practice across Nepal, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka called the Political Finance Integrity Network (POLFIN) to strengthen transparency in money and politics.
Tonga: With Tonga Women in ICT, we began a new program on digital rights in partnership with Global Affairs Canada.
Palestine: We provided expert advice to civil society organizations, EMBs, and diplomatic delegations on the electoral landscape in Palestine, with the support of Switzerland.
Côte d’Ivoire, Senegal, Gambia, and Kenya: We engaged with partner oversight bodies, judges, and civil society leaders to identify gaps, propose solutions, and deliver a robust technical assessment on political finance, electoral justice, and the empowerment of youth and women.
Guinea: Together with Guinean democracy experts, we delivered training for Supreme Court judges, magistrates, and clerks on dispute resolution ahead of the 2026 elections.
Thought leadership: We convened our Online Exchange Series on how data privacy violations, gendered disinformation, and authoritarian tactics are deeply interconnected, not separate fights. We brought together civil society, election management, and democracy practitioners to discuss the new UN resolution on political finance and how to make a difference. With partners, we released an article on the role of lawyers in electoral justice in Africa and a paper on the successful prosecution of political corruption, and contributed to Transparency International’s global methodologies on political finance. We are contributing as specialist editors to the new International Journal of Economic Crime.
European policy development: We contributed to the dialogue on the EU Democratic Shield and the Council of Europe Democratic Pact, joined the EU Working Group on Safety in Politics, and responded to the call for evidence on the future EU Anti-Corruption Strategy.
On the world stage: We hosted a workshop at the Team Europe Democracy Annual Event on countering hybrid threats to democratic institutions. We moderated an EISA panel in Kenya on the use of African treaty bodies to protect electoral rights; attended high-level meetings on democracy with the EU; participated in panels in Accra and Cambridge on corruption and illicit financial flows; and supported KDI’s Democracy Futures Dialogue on the margins of UNGA in New York.
Networks: We joined the Community of Democracy’s Youth Democracy Network to discuss what democracy means beyond the ballot box, and joined the Team Europe Democracy Initiative, Nets4Dem, and the Human Security Community of Practice.
